Press Release: CMP-funded PAC dishonest with Maine public about corridor width

FARMINGTON - Last week, Clean Energy Matters, the PAC funded by Central Maine Power and Avangrid, CMP’s parent company, ran a “fact check” on Facebook highlighting the fact that they were only clearing a 54 foot corridor in Segment 1 of the corridor, which is the most environmentally-sensitive section. That very same day, its crews on the ground cut a corridor that’s 98 feet wide, nearly double the width claimed in the ad.

This clear cut effectively bisects the last great undeveloped forest in the eastern United States and destroys critical wildlife habitat that should theoretically have been protected by vegetation within a tapering zone.

“It is abundantly clear that once again, CMP is telling the people of Maine one thing, and doing another,” said Sandi Howard of No CMP Corridor. “CMP’s false rhetoric about the width of the corridor, and the scope of the destruction, further cements its legacy as a dishonest project developer.”

“The corridor CMP is slashing through Maine's undeveloped operating forest, the biggest east of the Mississippi, is a clear cut...nothing more, nothing less,” said Tom Saviello, a volunteer with No CMP Corridor with a background in forestry. “If allowed to continue, more than 600 acres will be clear cut in just the first 53 miles of the project alone, leaving no vegetative buffer, as DEP intended, to protect critical brook trout habitat.”

Howard concludes, “If the people of Maine could see the destruction CMP is inflicting on this very special part of Maine, they would be outraged. Simply put, it’s devastating.”
